Sojourner Truth statue and plaza planned

A life size statue of Sojourner Truth is planned for installation in downtown Akron, Ohio to celebrate the women’s suffrage centennial and the pivotal role that she played in attaining voting equality for all women. The placement of this statue is planned near the site of the historic Old Stone Church on the north side of the United Way building. The church no longer exists on High Street, but her famous speech still calls out that fighting sexism alone is not enough, and that all people deserve equality. All people without exception. Sojourner Truth went on to become one of the most powerful advocates for human rights in the nineteenth century and this project aims to celebrate that achievement.
