Tuesday Musical names two top 2021 scholarship winners
Akron, OH, May 16, 2021 — Alto saxophonist Joshua Tuttle and clarinetist Amer Hasan won Tuesday Musical’s 2021 Scholarship Winners Concert on May 16.
Tuttle, a graduate student at Bowling Green State University, won the $2,000 Arden J. Yockey Scholarship. Hasan, a recent graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, won the $1,000 Arden J. Yockey Scholarship.
The 2021 Scholarship Winners Concert featured performances by the first- and second-place winners of Tuesday Musical’s 2021 Annual Scholarship Competition held virtually in March. The concert was performed in-person for a full-capacity, socially distanced audience at Faith Lutheran Church in Akron. The annual Winners Concert Scholarships are funded through a bequest in 1997 by Eva Mae Yockey in honor of her brother, Arden, a music educator in the Norton Public Schools.
Judges Eric Benjamin and Andrew Rindfleisch also selected violinist Kristine Clair Uchi Galano, a student at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, to receive an Honorable Mention.
Benjamin is associate conductor of the Akron Symphony, music director of the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, and teaches at Kent State University and the University of Mount Union. Rindfleisch is a composer, conductor, pianist, and head of the music composition program at Cleveland State University.
Now in its 65th year, Tuesday Musical’s Annual Scholarship Competition in March drew a record 163 applicants and awarded 21 scholarship awards totaling $23,500. Categories included music education, brass, marimba/classical steel pan, organ, piano, strings, voice, woodwinds, and classical guitar. New this year was the Howard E. Leisinger Viola Prize, established by brothers Richard Zook and Douglas Zook Jr. to honor their maternal grandfather.
