Assuage HER (Healing Encouraged and Reinforced)
Written by J. Travis
Assuage means to make an unpleasant feeling less intense. We are transforming traditional art classes to create a new and innovative approach that combines art skills as tools to alleviate stress and anxiety. Our classes are designed to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for women, with a particular focus on women of color, and offer them a creative outlet.
Studies have shown that art has significant benefits for mental health. By engaging in the creative process, individuals can express themselves nonverbally and release challenging emotions. Additionally, art can be meditative, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. Women of color, who often face unique challenges such as workplace discrimination and microaggressions, can benefit greatly from art classes. These classes can provide a safe space to express themselves creatively without fear of judgment, helping them find a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation. By participating in art classes, women of color can improve their mental well-being and enhance their overall quality of life.
Our classes allow participants to try new skills such as dessert decorating, makeup art, nail art, and creative writing. They are held throughout Summit County, and we have partnered with institutions such as Akron Zoo, Akron Art Museum, Elizabeth's Bookshop, and many more. We believe in supporting our community by working with small businesses, minority-owned businesses, and women-owned businesses in Summit County. The artists leading the classes are also residents of Summit County.
